DPP\’s weapon purchase from U.S. only pushes Taiwan into abyss: mainland spokesperson

BEIJING, June 30 (Xinhua) — A Chinese mainland spokesperson on Friday condemned Taiwan\’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities for weapon purchase from the United States, saying it would only push Taiwan people into the abyss of warfare.

Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, made the remarks in response to reports about a recent U.S. decision to sell arms to Taiwan worth approximately 440 million U.S. dollars.

More and more Taiwan residents have become aware of the United States\’ real attempts to harm or even ruin Taiwan, Zhu said, warning that \”Taiwan independence\” will lead nowhere, and the DPP authorities\’ scheme to seek U.S. support for their independence agenda will only lead to a dead end.

Zhu voiced firm opposition to all forms of official exchange and military contact between the United States and China\’s Taiwan region, and opposition to the U.S. arms sale to Taiwan, reiterating that this stance has been clear and consistent.

\”We urge the U.S. side to cease arms sales to Taiwan and sever military contact with the island in any form, and stop going further down an erroneous and dangerous path,\” the spokesperson said.
